How to run Hyper-V and VMware workstation 9 in Windows 8

I am sure you have installed Windows 8 by this time and tested out all nice new features. I am personally happy with the new available feature in Microsoft Windows 8 Pro – the Hyper-V. This is great since now you can build, deploy and work with virtualization right on your desktop without additional investment. However I  also like the competition – VMware Workstation 9 and I would like to run them both on my Windows 8 machine, since I have invested in few weeks back into high end laptop with a lot of power in order to be able to run virtualization and build my labs for testing 😉

Here is the right path to install and have both technologies on Windows 8 available:

  1. Install first VMwareworkstation 9 on your machine
  2. EnableHyper-V feature on Windows 8 and reboot
  3. Now you have both technologies available for your use 🙂

If you do not follow this path and enable first Hyper-V and then try to install VMware workstation you will get error message that  telling you that this product cannot be installed on the machine where Hyper-V is already running. Also you should know, you won’t be able to run them both at the same time. You can run Hyper-V but if you want to start using VMware, you will need first stop Hyper-V service on your machine.
