I have always created two USB bootable drives with latest OS for troubleshooting around the office or just in the case 🙂

Creating the OS X Yosemite bootable installation USB drive is simple and not different from previous versions of APPLE OS. You will need a USB drive 8GB or bigger. The USB drive should be empty – as the drive will be formatted in the process. I named my USB drive OSX and inserted into my [easyazon_link asin=”B00G2MB7KW” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”wn0d5-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”] Apple MacBook Pro [/easyazon_link] computer. In meantime I have downloaded the  OS X Yosemite installer file and is now on my machine as the OS X Yosemite.app under /Applications directory.

How to make the USB drive bootable with the latest OS X Yosemite:

  • Open terminal on your machine and  first check the Volumes
cd ..
cd Volumes
ls

CreateDisk

And as I mentioned above – you should see two volumes Macintosh HD and OSX – so one is your hard drive and second the ISB drive that I have named [easyazon_link asin=”1449362249″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”wn0d5-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”] OSX [/easyazon_link]for making this easier to follow.

  • We have confirmed that OSX – my USB drive is mounted, now is  time to run this command inside of terminal (make sure you change the destination Volume = USB according to your name if you have different)
sudo /Applications/Install OS X Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX --applicationpath /Applications/Install OS X Yosemite.app --nointeraction

Bootdisk1

You will be asked to enter your Administrator password in order to continue. Once password entered the process will start and format your USB drive and start copying installed files. Now you have to just wait.

"Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
Copying installer files to disk...
Copy complete.
Making disk bootable...
Copying boot files...
Copy complete.
Done."

Once you see DONE, you are done and your USB drive is now ready and bootable for your use.
