Watch out for SMiShing messages on your phone

SMiShing is a security attack in which the user is tricked into downloading a Trojan horse, virus or other malware onto his cellular phone or other mobile device. [easyazon_link identifier=”B014QQC5BU” locale=”US” tag=”wn0d5-20″] SMiShing [/easyazon_link] is short for “SMS phishing.”  Watch out for such SMS messages received on your phone as they will try to trick you to click the link in order to infect you and get your personal information.

I have just received such a message by SMS today – they trying to trick me to click it in order to update my info with CIBC bank 🙂

There is still many people who will click on this links and get tricked juts because the message is about bank.  SMS phishing uses phone text messages to deliver the bait to induce people to divulge their personal information. Fraudsters can go on to use this personal information to commit fraud.

How to protect yourself ?

Many banks don’t send text messages because they don’t want people to fall for smishing attacks. If they do send texts find out what number they use to generate them so you will know if they are legitimate. The scammers may use spoofed alias numbers that look like they are from your bank, so you should still be skeptical and not reply directly. Contact your bank at their regular customer service number to see if the text was legit or not.

In my case I have notified CIBC and they provided a direct line 1.800.465.2422 to provide immediately support if I have clicked the link and provided any information. Pay attention to the whole message 🙂

Good luck !
